Inspiring the Net Generation

(02/12/08)

The Social Enterprise Academy & Social Enterprise Schools dug out their old blazers and got fully involved with Determined to Succeed's Global Entrepreneurship Week at the end of the November.

Some of the Social Enterprise Academy's tutors went out to visit a number of schools around Scotland to generate enthusiasm for social enterprise. These visits formed part of a great variety of events including the Make Your Mark challenge - a national entrepreneurial competition. Claire Fraser from Social Enterprise Schools was a judge on the panel for the Scottish Regional Final which adjudged Caldervale High School's pitch as the strongest.

The Caldervale HS group's idea is to help improve their and their peers' exam results by setting study notes to rap music. They will now travel to the grand final, later this month, in London. We will post the results here in due course.

Good luck Caldervale High Scool from Social Enterprise Schools Scotland.

Stonelaw Fair Traders at the SE World Forum

Stewart & Nicola from the Stonelaw HS Fair Traders report on their experience at the Social Enterprise World Forum, which took place in Edinburgh on 3-5 September 2008.

Our attendance at the Social Enterprise World Forum was a great opportunity to inform the delegates about our Fairtrade Group and to have the chance to sell some of our products. Our sales over the two days totalled a fantastic £1050 from selling a selection of our popular items, especially jewellery.

It was great to see, meet, and talk to a large mix of people who were all genuinely interested and involved in social enterprise, like us. It was incredibly encouraging when the delegates expressed such interest in our group and posed questions to us. Most were really surprised that a school fair trade enterprise could have achieved sales in excess of £64,000 in less than five years. Many expressed delight that all of our profits sponsor the education of Aids orphans in KwaZulu Natal. We are proud of what we do and feel empowered to change the world for the better from the bottom up.

Some delegates even asked for contact details to keep up communication in the future, and we now plan to have an e-mailing list.

It was especially encouraging to meet those who had travelled from countries far away, such as Chile, to attend the event. This showed us how social enterprise has become a worldwide movement with support from all around the globe.

Celebration Ceremony

17 June 2008

On 17 June at Surgeons Hall, Edinburgh, the youngest social entrepreneurs in Scotland scooped the inaugural Social Enterprise School Awards. The awards were presented to the pupils of 10 different schools by MSP Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning. Fiona Hyslop said,

"The third sector offers a wealth of opportunities for young people to learn enterprise and entrepreneurial skills and I'm proud of the achievements of the young people here today and thanks the Social Enterprise Academy for its support in this important area."
Alongside the pupils, representatives from across the sector attended the well-received ceremony.  They were treated to stories about the building's history from Alan Watson (the Senior College Officer), and speeches from Fiona Hyslop and Arthur Merchant from the ILM - who also handed the ILM Young Scottish Social Entrepreneur 2008 Prize to Katie Priester of Lenzie Academy. Before being granted access to the complex's 'eye-opening' museums.

We would like to thank all who attended the ceremony, especially the representatives from each school. From the Autumn we will be looking forward to working with a further 25 schools.
